SMART Goal #2 Reflection-Finding and Doing Activities








Information on SMART Goal #2: This SMART Goal is about me/ Amber Naylor finding activities and bringing an activity every week to do with a student whom I will call "Nancy". "Nancy" is not her real name. It must be a secret. "Nancy" and I did an activity once a week. In total, I did four different activities with her at school. Before even starting this SMART Goal, I had to ask my supervisor who is in charge of the special education department at my 2nd placement school, "Nancy's" morning teacher and her assigned EA if doing this SMART Goal is ok. Of course, it was ok because I did the SMART goal. One of the activities was already at the 2nd placement school and the rest I have brought them from some stores. Those three activities I prepared at my house before bringing each one to my 2nd placement school. Before doing an activity, I made a brainstorm of five different activity ideas onto "Google Docs" at my house. Still at my house on "Google Docs", I highlighted my top three choices. Then I filled out my chart on how I am going to get my activity with an X to represent my answer. You will see how it is formed when you go under "Evidence of SMART Goal #2" of this website. After that, every Wednesday, I asked "Nancy's" assigned EA and her morning teacher which activity they liked best from my top three highlights for "Nancy". When I forgot or could not ask "Nancy's" assigned EA and teacher, I choose the activity and brought it to school or that it is already at school. Then I got the activity ready before the Monday coming up and did the activity on Monday. After the activity was done, I filled out another checklist which I point out if she likes the activity, does not the activity or if she was ok with it. I also used the X to represent my answers, check out "Evidence of SMART Goal #2" from this website to see this checklist has formed. I also did a description of my point of view of "Nancy's" experience. I did this SMART goal because I wanted to know what interests "Nancy" is into. We staff members (EAs) can use her interests with "Nancy's" positive behavior strategies such as her interests being her rewards for behaving well. If "Nancy" did not a/some activity/activities, at least the staff members and I know what she does not like. Also, her dislikes can be used for mandatory work that needs to be done and then gets something that she does like or other strategies that I don't even know. I will let the team at my 2nd placement school decide. I started this SMART goal on Monday, November 5th, 2018 and it finished on Monday, December 3rd, 2018.
How did the second SMART Goal go?
The second SMART Goal did not go well. The first activity which was playing and listening to those two tube things (there were three of those tube things but two are used at the same time) and some bells. That was considered ok because she had to be in the mood for that activity. "Nancy" did not like the other three activities at all. She would try to avoid them and/or whine at me because of me trying to get her to try out these activities. At least the morning teacher, her EA and I know that her interests are not those activities. I would try the first activity again as maybe she might like it more another time. I also know that "Nancy" does have other interests such as read aloud and that she loves when I played with a guitar and sung (which is my first SMART Goal), even though these activities were not used in this SMART Goal. This SMART Goal was successful because I did what I was supposed to be doing such as having and doing the activity and filling out charts, lists, and descriptions. The experiences of this SMART Goal was not great as there was not one activity that "Nancy" liked.
